Hot rolled stainless steel round bar, 16 mm to 125 mm, supplied black, spot ground or fully ground
OVERVIEW
Hot rolled stainless steel round bar is bar formed on a rolling mill above the recrystallisation temperature of the steel and supplied with the rolled surface, without a cold finishing pass. Laxcon Steels rolls round bar from 16 mm to 125 mm in lengths up to 8 metres on its own mills, from billets cast in its own melting shop. Dimensional tolerance follows ASTM A484 or EN 10060, and the bar is supplied black, spot ground or fully ground. Every bar is ultrasonically tested.
Hot rolled bar is the starting stock for machined parts such as shafts, gears and axles in heavy trucks, agricultural equipment and the automotive industry, and for the cold finishing lines that make bright bar. Heat treatment is supplied as soft annealing, solution annealing, spheroidised annealing, oil and water quenching, and tempering and normalising; the condition delivered is stated on the certificate. Grade confirmation is by positive material identification with a handheld spectrometer, and every bar is declared free of radioactive, mercury and lead contamination. The ferritic, austenitic, duplex, precipitation hardening and martensitic families are set out in the grade reference; the grades rolled for a given size are confirmed at enquiry.
Weight per metre by diameter is in the round bar weight chart. Grade, finish and tolerance are compared for a round bar order in the round bar buyer's guide.

Density 7.90 g/cm³ (π/4 x d² x 0.0079). A 304 bar at 7.93 g/cm³ runs 0.4 percent heavier, a 316 bar at 7.98 g/cm³ 1 percent heavier. Sizes are the published range at the nominal diameters shown.
Hot rolled stainless bar is supplied in one of three surface conditions: black, with the rolling scale on, for bar that will be fully machined; annealed and pickled, with the scale removed in acid, for bar that is welded or that must be free of the oxide layer; and peeled, where the skin is removed by a cutting tool and the bar becomes the feedstock for the bright range. The heat treatment named on the certificate is the one that fixes the mechanical properties: solution annealing for the austenitic grades, spheroidise or soft annealing for the martensitic grades that are to be machined, quench and temper for the martensitic grades that go into service hardened.
Ultrasonic testing to the customer's acceptance standard is available on every size, and is the normal requirement on bar that will be forged, bored or used as a shaft. Sour-service orders to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 add a hardness limit and a condition requirement that are stated on the certificate.
The hot rolled bar is the parent of every finished round on this site. A bright bar is a hot rolled bar that has been drawn, peeled or ground to an ISO 286 class; a precision shaft quality bar is a bright bar held to a fit and a straightness; a forged and proof machined bar covers the diameters above 120 mm that a rolling mill does not reach. Where the customer removes every surface in machining, the hot rolled bar at EN 10060 or ASTM A484 tolerance is the lowest-cost route, and the 51 published diameters from 16 to 125 mm are held as standard.
Grade, finish and tolerance are weighed for a round bar order in the round bar buyer's guide.
Laxcon publishes hot rolled stainless steel round bars from 16 mm to 125 mm diameter, in lengths up to 8 metres.
Hot rolled stainless steel round bars can be supplied to ASTM A484 or EN 10060 tolerances with soft annealing, solution annealing, spheroidized annealing, oil or water quenching, tempering or normalizing.
The published supply condition for hot rolled round bars includes 100 percent ultrasonic testing, spot-ground or fully-ground options, and grade confirmation through handheld PMI.
Laxcon packs hot rolled stainless steel round bars in standard bundles of 500 to 1,000 kg with HDPE or LDPE wrapping and two lifting slings. ISPM 15 wooden boxes and fibre-tube packing are available, and every bundle is marked with heat number, grade, size, and net and gross weight.
An enquiry for hot rolled stainless steel round bars is quotable when it states the grade, governing standard, metric size or profile, tolerance, finish or heat-treatment condition, length, quantity, test or inspection requirement, and delivery destination.
