Product Description

Stainless steel round bar is bar of circular cross-section, ordered by its diameter. Laxcon Steels supplies round bar from 5 mm to 550 mm in four finishes, from steel melted in its own melting shop: hot rolled round bar from 16 mm to 125 mm, bright bar from 5 mm to 115 mm, precision shaft quality bar from 8 mm to 81 mm and proof machined bar from 120 mm to 550 mm.

The finish fixes the tolerance and the surface. Hot rolled bar keeps the rolled surface and is held to ASTM A484 or EN 10060. Bright bar is cold drawn, peeled, turned or ground to h7, h8, h9, h10, h11, k12 or k13, with a surface finish down to Ra 0.2 micron and straightness up to 0.5 mm per metre. Precision shaft quality bar is ground and polished to h7, h8, h9, j6, f7 or f8, with straightness of 0.015 inch total indicator reading per 10 feet. Proof machined bar is rough turned below the outer skin, so the surface is proven free of defects before the customer's final machining.

Weight per metre by diameter is in the round bar weight chart, and grade chemistry is in the grade reference. Grade, finish and tolerance are compared for a round bar order in the round bar buyer's guide.

Density 7.90 g/cm³ (d² x 0.006205). A 304 bar at 7.93 g/cm³ runs 0.4 percent heavier, a 316 bar at 7.98 g/cm³ 1 percent heavier. Sizes are the published range at the nominal diameters shown.

Uses

Hot rolled round bar is the starting stock for machined parts such as shafts, gears and axles in heavy trucks, agricultural equipment and the automotive industry, and for the cold finishing lines that make bright bar. Precision shaft quality bar is used for pump shafts, cylinder shafts, boat shafts, piston shafts, valve shafts and bearing bars. Proof machined bar covers the large diameters, 120 mm to 550 mm, that are forged rather than rolled, for large shafts and pressure parts.

Where the customer removes every surface in machining, the hot rolled bar at EN 10060 or ASTM A484 tolerance is the lowest-cost route. A bright bar goes into a lathe, a grinder or a bearing seat with no preparatory cut. A precision shaft quality bar is finished to a fit, a straightness and a stated minimum yield, because it rotates in service.

Grades

Round bar is supplied in the ferritic, austenitic, duplex, precipitation hardening and martensitic families set out in the grade reference, and in alloy and carbon steels such as SAE 4140, SAE 4340, EN 8, EN 19 and EN 24. The grades rolled for a given size are confirmed at enquiry. Composition, equivalents and standards for the grades most often ordered as round bar are on the grade pages listed under the questions below.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What stainless steel round bar sizes does Laxcon publish?

Laxcon publishes stainless steel round bars from 5 mm to 550 mm diameter. Bright bars run from 5 mm to 115 mm, hot rolled bars from 16 mm to 125 mm, precision shaft quality bars from 8 mm to 81 mm and proof machined bars from 120 mm to 550 mm.

02

Which lengths are stainless steel round bars supplied in?

Hot rolled round bars are supplied in lengths up to 8 metres, bright bars up to 6.5 metres, precision shaft quality bars up to 6.4 metres and proof machined bars up to 6 metres.

03

Which tolerances apply to stainless steel round bars?

Hot rolled and proof machined round bars are supplied to ASTM A484 or EN 10060. Bright bars are supplied to h7, h8, h9, h10, h11, k12, k13 or ASTM A484, and precision shaft quality bars to h7, h8, h9, j6, f7 or f8.

04

How are stainless steel round bars tested?

Every hot rolled round bar is ultrasonically tested, and proof machined bars are ultrasonically tested through the machined surface. Eddy current testing is carried out on bright and precision shaft quality bars where the order calls for it, and positive material identification with a handheld spectrometer confirms the grade.

05

How can stainless steel round bars be packed and traced?

Laxcon packs stainless steel round bars in standard bundles of 500 to 1,000 kg with HDPE or LDPE wrapping and two lifting slings. ISPM 15 wooden boxes and fibre-tube packing are available, precision shaft quality bar is packed with distance rings in plywood boxes, and every bundle is marked with heat number, grade, size, and net and gross weight.
