OVERVIEW

Product Description

SS Continuous Cast Billets / Blooms are obtained directly from the steel solidification process without any deformation. Steel bloom and blooming mill state-of-the-art technology are used in this process. SS Continuous Cast Billets and Blooms casters continuously cast molten/ liquid steel into semi-products of various sizes and shapes, including a square cross section, in various kinds of steel grades with cross-sections smaller than slab semi-products. These stainless steel billets/blooms are ideal inputs for the subsequent hot working process, especially for long products such as seamless pipe.

Governing standards

EN 10088-3: Stainless steels: technical delivery conditions for semi-finished products, bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products for general purposes. Composition, heat treatment condition and mechanical properties per grade.
ASTM A314: Stainless steel billets and bars for forging.
ASTM A484/A484M: General requirements for stainless steel bars, billets and forgings: permissible variations in dimensions, straightness, weight and length, and the test and marking requirements every bar order inherits.

Billet, bloom and ingot

A bloom and a billet are the same continuously cast product at two sizes: the trade calls the larger square sections, from about 150 mm, blooms, and the smaller ones billets, with the rectangular sections cast for flat and section rolling counted with the blooms. Both are cast on the works' continuous caster from the ladle, cut to length by saw, and inspected, spot ground or fully ground before dispatch. An ingot is the alternative: poured into a mould rather than cast continuously, larger, and used where a forging needs a reduction ratio or a size the caster does not give.

Every section on this page is a semi-finished product: it goes to a rolling mill or a forge, not into service. Customers who roll or forge stainless buy billets and blooms to the composition of the grade register and to the surface, length and internal-soundness conditions stated on the order.
