AISI 430 Round Bars
AISI 430 hot rolled round bar is a ferritic chromium stainless bar used for machined parts in mild indoor and water service.
HOT ROLLED ROUND BARS
AISI 430 hot rolled round bar
AISI 430 hot rolled round bar is a ferritic stainless steel bar rolled from a chromium steel that carries no nickel. Chromium of 16.0 to 18.0 percent gives the corrosion resistance, and carbon held to 0.12 percent maximum keeps the steel soft enough to machine and form. The grade is specified in place of AISI 304 where the service is mild, where the greater corrosion resistance and toughness of 304 are not needed, and where a nickel free steel is wanted. It is specified in place of AISI 410 where the finished part is not meant to be hardened, since 410 takes its strength from quenching and tempering while 430 cannot be hardened by heat treatment. The bar is magnetic in every condition.
The bar is supplied annealed, the condition ASTM A276 covers for Type 430, for which that standard sets a tensile strength of 485 MPa minimum and a yield strength of 275 MPa minimum. Annealed 430 work hardens less than the austenitic grades, so it turns and threads more predictably and holds size better on long runs. Welding coarsens the grain beside the joint and lowers its toughness, so welded sections are often annealed again afterwards. Bar of this grade is turned into shafts and spindles for domestic appliances and kitchen equipment, studs and fasteners for indoor use, bushes and valve parts for mild water service, and machined architectural fittings. Laxcon Steels rolls the bar to order.
Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.12 maximum, manganese 1.0 maximum, sulphur 0.03 maximum, phosphorus 0.04 maximum, silicon 1.0 maximum and chromium 16.0 to 18.0.
