AISI 410 Round Bars
AISI 410 hot rolled round bar is a martensitic stainless bar, hardened by heat treatment, used for shafts, valve parts and fasteners.
HOT ROLLED ROUND BARS
AISI 410 hot rolled round bar
AISI 410 hot rolled round bar is the basic martensitic stainless steel rolled to round section, in diameters from 16 to 125 mm. Chromium between 11.5 and 13.5 percent gives the bar its stainless behaviour, and carbon from 0.08 percent lets it harden when it is austenitised, quenched and tempered. That is why it is chosen ahead of the ferritic and austenitic stainless grades, which stay soft whatever heat treatment they see. It carries less carbon than AISI 420, so it reaches a lower hardness but keeps more toughness and is easier to weld. Unlike AISI 416 it has no added sulphur, so it machines more slowly and carries no sulphide inclusions across the section. Laxcon Steels rolls the bar to order.
The bar is supplied annealed for machining, or hardened and tempered to an agreed strength. ASTM A276 sets the annealed minima for 410 at 485 MPa tensile and 275 MPa yield. The steel is magnetic in every condition. Machining is done in the annealed condition and the part is hardened afterwards, because quenched 410 is hard on tooling. Welding calls for preheat and for tempering after the weld, since the weld zone hardens as it cools. Corrosion resistance holds in air, fresh water and steam, and improves as the surface is ground and polished. Bar of this grade goes into pump and valve shafts, valve stems and trim, bolting and studs, and blanks that customers forge into turbine and compressor parts.
Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.08 to 0.15, manganese 1.0 maximum, sulphur 0.03 maximum, phosphorus 0.04 maximum, silicon 1.0 maximum, chromium 11.5 to 13.5 and nickel 0.75 maximum.
