Square Bright Bars are produced from hot-rolled bars through cold drawing and polishing processes. Each drawn square size on this page is produced from the black (hot rolled) square listed beside it in the size table: the draw reduces the section by roughly 1 to 2 mm on the side and squares the corners, and the tolerance goes from the hot rolled allowance of EN 10059 to h11 under EN 10278. A part that is machined on all four faces is cut from the black bar; a part that keeps one or more faces as supplied, such as a key, a guide or an architectural section, is cut from the drawn bar.

Weight per metre is side squared times 0.0079, so a 40 mm square weighs 12.6 kg per metre, 27 percent more than a 40 mm round of the same grade. The round cornered square is the hot rolled forging-quality section for the sizes above this range, 45 to 100 mm.
