AISI 416 Flat Bars
AISI 416 HRAP flat bar is a free-machining martensitic stainless flat, milled and sawn into valve parts, keys, gibs and machined blocks.
HRAP FLAT BARS
AISI 416 flat bar
AISI 416 hot rolled, annealed and pickled flat bar is a martensitic stainless flat rolled from the free-machining grade, which is AISI 410 with sulphur added. Sulphur is specified at 0.15 percent or more, and the manganese sulphide it forms breaks the chip at the tool, so the flat can be milled, drilled and sawn at feeds 410 will not take. Chromium of 12 to 14 percent leaves the corrosion class of 410 unchanged, but the same sulphides interrupt the passive film and give pitting a place to start, and they lower toughness. 410 flat is chosen where the part is welded or takes shock; 416 where the flat is mostly cut away and machining time decides the cost.
The flat is supplied annealed, soft enough to cut, and is hardened afterwards where the part calls for it by austenitising, which reheats the steel until its structure changes, then quenching and tempering to the hardness wanted. It is magnetic in every condition. Pickling leaves a clean grey surface, so the first cut is taken through metal and not through mill scale, which matters on a flat where whole faces are milled. Welding is avoided, because the sulphides crack the weld metal as it cools. Flat bar in this grade is machined into valve and pump parts, gland and cover plates, keys, gibs and wear strips, and blocks sawn off for milled components. Laxcon Steels rolls the flat to order.
Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.15 maximum, manganese 1.25 maximum, sulphur 0.15 minimum, phosphorus 0.06 maximum, silicon 1.0 maximum, chromium 12.0 to 14.0 and zirconium plus molybdenum 0.6 maximum.
