AISI 316 Threaded Bars
AISI 316 threaded bar is molybdenum-bearing austenitic threaded rod, M6 to M45, used for fastening in chloride service.
THREADED BARS
AISI 316 threaded bar
AISI 316 threaded bar is fully threaded austenitic rod in the molybdenum-bearing grade, threaded from M6 to M45 (1/4 to 1-3/4 inch) in lengths to 6 metres. Molybdenum, added to the chromium and nickel of AISI 304, raises resistance to pitting, the localised attack chlorides start at a surface, so 316 is specified for fastenings in salt air, splash zones, brine and process water where 304 pits at the thread roots. It is chosen over 316L where the bar is bolted rather than welded, the lower carbon of 316L being bought against sensitisation, the carbide precipitation that opens grain boundaries beside a heavy weld. Laxcon Steels rolls and threads the bar to order.
The bar is supplied solution annealed, the condition that takes chromium carbides back into solution and leaves the steel softest and most corrosion resistant; it cannot be hardened by heat treatment and gains strength only from cold work. Threads are rolled rather than cut, so metal is displaced into the form and the grain follows the thread. ISO 3506-1 sets the classes A4-50 annealed, A4-70 cold worked and A4-80 high strength cold worked, the number being the minimum tensile strength in tens of megapascals; ASTM A193 grade B8M covers the same steel as bolting, Class 1 solution treated and Class 2 solution treated and strain hardened. Typical uses are anchor and hanger rods in coastal plant, tie rods and studs on chemical equipment, fixings in water and effluent treatment, and marine handrail fastenings.
Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.08 maximum, manganese 2.0 maximum, sulphur 0.03 maximum, phosphorus 0.045 maximum, silicon 0.75 maximum, chromium 16.0 to 18.0, nickel 10.0 to 14.0, molybdenum 2.0 to 3.0 and nitrogen 0.1 maximum.

Equivalents of AISI 316

| EN number | 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) |
| JIS | SUS 316 |
Equivalence means nearest counterpart, not identity: each standards body sets its own composition window, so the limits of the standard named on the order govern.
Pitting resistance
The pitting resistance equivalent number of AISI 316 runs from 22.6 at the specified minimum chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen to 29.5 at the maxima, computed as PREN = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N (International Molybdenum Association). It ranks resistance to chloride pitting against other austenitic and duplex grades and nothing else: it does not predict crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking or service life. The pitting resistance reference carries the full table.

Property classes of AISI 316 threaded bar
| Marking | Standard | Minimum tensile strength | Minimum 0.2 percent proof stress | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A4-50 | ISO 3506-1 | 500 MPa | 210 MPa | annealed |
| A4-70 | ISO 3506-1 | 700 MPa | 450 MPa | cold worked |
| A4-80 | ISO 3506-1 | 800 MPa | 600 MPa | high strength cold worked |
| B8M Class 1 | ASTM A193 | 515 MPa | 205 MPa | carbide solution treated |
| B8M Class 2 (up to 19 mm) | ASTM A193 | 760 MPa | 655 MPa | solution treated and strain hardened |
ISO 3506-1 classes apply to thread diameters up to M39 for class 50 and to M24 for classes 70 and 80 unless the standard's larger-diameter tables are invoked; ASTM A193 Class 2 properties fall with diameter above 19 mm.
Ordering AISI 316 threaded bar
An enquiry for this bar is complete when it states the grade and governing standard (AISI 316 to EN 10088-3, with the property class to ISO 3506-1 or ASTM A193 grade B8M), the condition or class, the thread size and form to ASME B1.13M or ASME B1.1 class 2A, the length, the quantity, the certificate type to EN 10204, and any test to be reported, such as PMI confirmation of grade or ultrasonic testing.
