HEXAGONAL BRIGHT BARS

SAE 4140 hexagonal bright bar

SAE 4140 hexagonal bright bar is an alloy steel bar of hexagonal section, cold drawn to size across the flats from the annealed hot rolled hexagon. Carbon at about 0.40 percent sets the strength the bar reaches after heat treatment, and the chromium and the molybdenum carry that strength to the centre of the section instead of leaving it near the surface. The lower carbon SAE 4130 tempers to a lower strength and suits lighter duty; the nickel bearing SAE 4340 hardens deeper than a 52 mm hexagon ever needs. The same steel is written 42CrMo4 in the European lists and EN 19 in the older British one.

The bar is supplied annealed or normalised for machining, or hardened and tempered to a condition of BS 970, where condition T covers 850 to 1000 MPa tensile strength. Annealed bar cuts cleanly and is hardened after machining; hardened and tempered bar is machined and used as it stands. Welding needs preheat and a temper afterwards, because the carbon and the alloy content harden the weld area, so threaded joints are the normal answer. The steel does not resist corrosion and is plated, painted or oiled. Laxcon Steels draws the bar from 15 to 52 mm across flats, held to h11 under EN 10278, with the corner to corner measurement 1.155 times the flats. Typical work is bolt and stud blanks, nuts, socket and tool holders, and hydraulic adapters.

Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.38 to 0.43, manganese 0.75 to 1.0, sulphur 0.04 maximum, phosphorus 0.035 maximum, silicon 0.15 to 0.35, chromium 0.8 to 1.1 and molybdenum 0.15 to 0.25.
