Product Description

Stainless steel flat bar is bar of rectangular cross-section, ordered by its width and thickness. Laxcon Steels supplies flat bar from 20 mm to 150 mm wide and 5 mm to 50 mm thick in two finishes: HRAP flat bar, hot rolled, annealed and pickled, from 20 mm to 150 mm wide and 5 mm to 50 mm thick, and cold drawn flat bar from 20 mm to 80 mm wide and 8 mm to 40 mm thick.

The finish fixes the tolerance and the surface. HRAP flat bar is held to ASTM A484 or EN 10058 and has the matt, pickled surface of the hot rolled section, in lengths up to 6.4 metres. Cold drawn flat bar is drawn through a die at room temperature to h11 and ASTM A484, with a bright surface and sharp edges, and is supplied cold drawn and pickled, or solution annealed after drawing, in lengths from 2 metres to 6 metres.

Weight per metre for a given width and thickness is worked out by the weight calculator, and the composition limits for each grade are in the grade reference.

HRAP flat and cold drawn flat

The HRAP flat bar leaves the rolling stand at over 1,000 degrees Celsius with a chromium-depleted oxide scale on every face. Annealing restores the corrosion resistance of the grade, and pickling in a nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixture removes the scale and leaves the matt, silver-grey surface that HRAP denotes. Widths run 20 to 150 mm and thicknesses 5 to 50 mm, to EN 10058 or ASTM A484 tolerances.

The cold drawn flat bar is drawn through a die to h11 on both width and thickness under EN 10278, with sharp edges and a bright surface, in widths of 20 to 80 mm and thicknesses of 8 to 40 mm. Its yield strength is raised by the cold work, which is why a drawn flat is specified for slides, keys, wear strips and any part that is used as supplied on at least one face. For structural, architectural and fabrication work at the full 150 mm width, the HRAP flat is the standard section.

Weight per metre is width x thickness x 0.0079 at a density of 7.90 g/cm³. Every width and thickness combination is listed with its weight on the two finish pages, and the weight calculator takes any width, thickness and length.

Uses and grades

HRAP flat bars are used in the chemical industry, architectural and structural design components, pharmaceutical plant, kitchen equipment, fuel gas cleaning, seawater systems, firewalls and blast walls, heat exchangers, bridges and cargo tanks. HRAP flat bar is supplied in 304 and 316 and in other grades; cold drawn flat bar is drawn in the low-carbon and stabilised austenitic grades that tolerate the cold work without sensitising. Composition limits for each grade are in the grade reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What stainless steel flat bar sizes does Laxcon publish?

Laxcon publishes stainless steel flat bars from 20 mm to 150 mm wide and 5 mm to 50 mm thick. HRAP flat bars run from 20 mm to 150 mm wide and 5 mm to 50 mm thick, and cold drawn flat bars from 20 mm to 80 mm wide and 8 mm to 40 mm thick, in the width and thickness combinations listed on each finish page.

02

Which lengths are stainless steel flat bars supplied in?

HRAP flat bars are supplied in lengths up to 6.4 metres, and cold drawn flat bars in lengths from 2 metres to 6 metres.

03

Which tolerances apply to stainless steel flat bars?

HRAP flat bars are supplied to ASTM A484 and EN 10058 tolerances. Cold drawn flat bars are supplied to h11 and ASTM A484 tolerances on both width and thickness.

04

How are stainless steel flat bars identified and checked?

Stainless steel flat bars are inkjet marked with grade and size, and HRAP flat bar ends can be colour coded to the customer's requirement. Positive material identification with a handheld spectrometer confirms the grade.

05

How can stainless steel flat bars be packed and traced?

Laxcon packs stainless steel flat bars in standard bundles of 500 to 1,000 kg with HDPE or LDPE wrapping and two lifting slings. ISPM 15 wooden boxes and fibre-tube packing are available, and every bundle is marked with heat number, grade, size, and net and gross weight.
