# Standard Stainless Steel Bar Sizes: Round, Square, Hexagon, Flat and Angle

Published 4 September 2026 9 min read

Stainless steel bar is rolled and drawn to a fixed ladder of standard sizes, and a part designed on a size from that ladder is quoted from stock and cut from a standard length; a part designed on a size between rungs is quoted as a special, at a premium and a lead time. This reference lists the standard sizes for each bar form as rolled and drawn at Laxcon Steels, the length each form is supplied in, and the weight per metre at 7.90 g/cm³, which is the density used in the trade for stainless steel weight charts. Round bar is listed by diameter, square bar by side, hexagon by across flats, flat bar by width and thickness, and angle by leg and thickness. Every figure below is read from the works' published size list; the size tables on each product page are the same data and are checked against it on every build.

## Round bar diameters

Hot rolled round bar is rolled in the 51 diameters below, from 16 to 125 mm. The ladder is close to the preferred number series used by every stainless bar mill, with the additions the Indian and export markets ask for: the inch-derived sizes 23.2 mm and 57.5 mm, and the intermediate 47, 53, 67.5, 73.5, 77.5 and 83 mm that pipe fittings and shaft blanks are machined from. Weight per metre is diameter squared times 0.006205; a 40 mm bar weighs 9.93 kg per metre and a 6 metre length 59.6 kg. Bright bar is drawn or ground to any diameter from 5 to 115 mm, and the same weight formula applies to its nominal size.

## Square and hexagon bar

Square bright bar is drawn from 12.7 to 55 mm on the side and hexagon bright bar from 15 to 52 mm across flats; the sizes are the drawn sizes, each produced from a black bar one to two millimetres larger. The inch sizes (12.7, 15.88, 19.05, 25.4 mm and their multiples) are in the ladder alongside the metric ones. A square weighs side squared times 0.0079 per metre, a hexagon across-flats squared times 0.006842, and a hexagon measures 1.155 times its across-flats dimension across corners, which is the dimension that decides the collet or the bar feeder it fits.

## Flat bar

HRAP flat bar is rolled in the widths below, and not every thickness is rolled at every width: the table lists, for each width, the thicknesses in the published range. Weight per metre is width times thickness times 0.0079, so a 50 x 10 mm flat weighs 3.95 kg per metre. Cold drawn flat bar covers 20 to 80 mm wide in 304L, 316L, 316Ti and 321 to h11 on both dimensions; its size list is on the [cold drawn flat bar page](https://www.laxconsteels.com/products/cold-drawn-flat-bars/).

## Angles

Equal angles run from 20 x 20 x 3 mm to 127 x 127 mm and unequal angles from 25 x 15 x 5 mm to 100 x 75 mm, each in the thicknesses listed. Weight per metre for an equal angle is (2 x leg x thickness minus thickness squared) x 0.0079, and for an unequal angle (long leg plus short leg minus thickness) x thickness x 0.0079; both read 1.3 to 2.8 percent under the rolled section because the root fillet and toe radii are not in the formula. The [equal angle](https://www.laxconsteels.com/products/hrap-equal-angles/) and [unequal angle](https://www.laxconsteels.com/products/hrap-unequal-angles/) pages print the weight for every combination.

## Lengths

Hot rolled round bar and round cornered squares are supplied up to 8 metres, bright round bar up to 6.5 metres, precision shaft bar, flats, angles, channels and T-profile up to 6.4 metres, and square, hexagon, threaded and forged bar up to 6 metres. Fixed lengths are supplied to a plus-only tolerance, random lengths within a stated range, and cut pieces to the customer's length and tolerance. A bundle of hot rolled or bright bar weighs 500 to 1,000 kg; the [weight calculator](https://www.laxconsteels.com/weight-calculator/) gives the weight of any size, length and count, and the [weight charts](https://www.laxconsteels.com/weight-charts/) print the per-metre figures for every form.
