AISI 316 stainless steel equal angle is the molybdenum-bearing austenitic section, 20 x 20 x 3 to 127 x 127 mm, used in chloride service.

## AISI 316 equal angle

AISI 316 equal angle is a hot rolled angle section with two legs of the same width, rolled from the molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. Chromium forms the thin passive oxide film that keeps the surface from rusting, nickel holds the austenitic structure, and the 2.0 to 3.0 percent molybdenum raises resistance to pitting, the local attack chlorides start where that film is weakest. That molybdenum is the reason the grade is specified in place of AISI 304 angle: coastal and marine air, brine, treated water and many process chemicals pit a 304 section while leaving a 316 one sound. It is chosen over 316L where the frame is bolted or lightly welded, the lower carbon of 316L being bought for heavy welds left as welded. Laxcon Steels rolls the angle to order.

The angle is supplied annealed and pickled: the anneal takes the chromium carbides back into solution and the pickling strips the rolling scale. ASTM A276 sets the annealed minima at 515 MPa tensile strength and 205 MPa yield strength, and the section is non-magnetic in this condition. The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment and takes strength only from cold work, so drilling and sawing call for sharp edges, a firm feed and a rigid setup. It welds by the usual arc processes, although slow cooling through about 450 to 850 C sensitises the weld zone, meaning chromium carbides form at the grain boundaries and open them to attack. Typical uses are frames and supports in chemical plant, walkways and handrails on coastal structures, brackets in food and pharmaceutical plants, and bases for pumps handling chlorinated water.

Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.08 maximum, manganese 2.0 maximum, sulphur 0.03 maximum, phosphorus 0.045 maximum, silicon 0.75 maximum, chromium 16.0 to 18.0, nickel 10.0 to 14.0, molybdenum 2.0 to 3.0 and nitrogen 0.1 maximum.

## Equivalents of AISI 316

| Standard | Designation |
| --- | --- |
| UNS | S31600 |
| EN number | 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) |
| JIS | SUS 316 |

Equivalence means nearest counterpart, not identity: each standards body sets its own composition window, so the limits of the standard named on the order govern.

## Pitting resistance

The pitting resistance equivalent number of AISI 316 runs from 22.6 at the specified minimum chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen to 29.5 at the maxima, computed as PREN = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N (International Molybdenum Association). It ranks resistance to chloride pitting against other austenitic and duplex grades and nothing else: it does not predict crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking or service life. The [pitting resistance reference](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/pitting-resistance/) carries the full table.

## Ordering AISI 316 equal angle

An enquiry for this section is complete when it states the grade and governing standard (AISI 316 to EN 10088-3 or ASTM A276), the condition (annealed and pickled), the leg width and thickness with the tolerance to EN 10056-2 or ASTM A484, the cut length, the quantity, the certificate type to EN 10204, and any test to be reported, such as PMI confirmation of grade.
