# Duplex 2205 Round Bars

Duplex 2205 hot rolled round bar is a high strength stainless bar used for shafts, valve parts, bolting and marine fittings.

## Duplex 2205 hot rolled round bar

Duplex 2205 hot rolled round bar is a stainless bar rolled in the standard duplex grade, UNS S32205, in diameters from 16 to 125 mm. The steel holds roughly equal amounts of ferrite and austenite, and that mixed structure gives it about twice the yield strength of 304 or 316. ASTM A479 sets 655 MPa tensile strength and 450 MPa yield for the grade solution annealed. Chromium near 22 percent, molybdenum around 3 percent and added nitrogen raise its resistance to pitting and to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which is the failure austenitic bar suffers in warm chloride. Lean duplex grades leave out most of the molybdenum, and 2507 super duplex carries more chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen for a heavier chloride load. Laxcon Steels rolls the bar to order.

Bar leaves the mill solution annealed and water quenched, which returns the chromium and molybdenum to solution and settles the balance between the two phases. The grade takes no hardening from heat treatment, so its strength comes from the structure itself. Service stops at about 300 degrees Celsius, above which the ferrite turns brittle. The bar cuts harder than 304 and work hardens quickly, so machining wants a rigid setup, positive rake and a firm feed. Welding holds the heat input inside a set band and uses a filler richer in nickel, so the weld metal does not cool to almost all ferrite. Common parts are pump and valve shafts, seawater and desalination components, offshore bolting, and flanges forged from the bar.

Composition limits in weight percent are carbon 0.03 maximum, manganese 2.0 maximum, sulphur 0.02 maximum, phosphorus 0.03 maximum, silicon 1.0 maximum, chromium 22.0 to 23.0, nickel 4.5 to 6.5, molybdenum 3.0 to 3.5 and nitrogen 0.14 to 0.2.

## Pitting resistance

The pitting resistance equivalent number of Duplex 2205 runs from 34.1 at the specified minimum chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen to 37.8 at the maxima, computed as PREN = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N (International Molybdenum Association). It ranks resistance to chloride pitting against other austenitic and duplex grades and nothing else: it does not predict crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking or service life. ## Ordering Duplex 2205 hot rolled round bar

An enquiry for this grade in this form states the grade and the standard it is ordered to, EN 10088-3 or ASTM A479, the solution annealed condition, the diameter and the tolerance class to ASTM A484 or EN 10060, the finish as black, spot ground or fully ground, the cut length within 8 metres, the quantity, the certificate type to EN 10204, and any ultrasonic test, PMI check or NACE MR0175 requirement.
