## Product Description

Duplex stainless steels bars have enormous hardness, making them the first choice for applications that need high strength, such as in the oil and gas industry. Duplex stainless steels are called “duplex” because they have a two-phase microstructure consisting of grains of Ferrite and Austenite stainless steel. This structure provides a unique set of benefits. [Duplex 1.4462](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/duplex-2205/) round bar is particularly notable for its excellent properties.

Duplex steel is about twice as strong as regular austenitic or ferritic stainless steel. With higher chromium content, it is corrosion-resistant and significantly has better toughness and ductility than ferritic grades. [Super duplex](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/super-duplex-2507/) and other [duplex grades](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/duplex/) offer enhanced performance for demanding applications. ## Duplex against 316 and against super duplex

Against [316](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/aisi-316/), the standard duplex grade [2205](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/duplex-2205/) (1.4462, UNS S32205) has roughly twice the minimum yield strength (450 MPa against 205 MPa in the bar specifications), a higher pitting resistance equivalent (about 35 against about 25) and better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, at a lower nickel content. It is therefore the grade for chloride service where a thinner section saves weight or where 316 has pitted. Its limits are temperature: duplex is not used above about 300 degrees Celsius or below about minus 50, because the ferrite phase embrittles at both ends.

[Super duplex 2507](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/super-duplex-2507/) (1.4410, UNS S32750) raises chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen to a PREN above 40 for seawater and the most severe chloride service; lean duplex grades such as 2304 lower the molybdenum for a price closer to 304 where strength rather than corrosion drives the choice.
