## Product Description

As one of the top stainless steel cold drawn [flat bars](https://www.laxconsteels.com/products/stainless-steel-flat-bars/) manufacturers India, we carry out the cold drawn stainless steel process in which the pointed end of the bar or coil is passed through the die, where it enters a gripping device of the drawing machine. The drawing machine draws the remaining unreduced section of the bar through the die. The die reduces the cross-sectional area of the original bar, increases the length of the original product, and shapes the profile of the product.

The final product being drawn is at room temperature, i.e., cold finished steel bar, which exhibits a bright and polished finish, and improved machining characteristics. The drawing operation enhances the mechanical properties, tensile strength, and precise and uniform dimensional tolerances, offering tight tolerances in the final product. This cold finished steel provides excellent finished steel bar quality compared to hot rolled steel or cold rolled steel.

Composition limits for 304L, 316L, 316Ti and 321, and for the DIN numbers they are ordered under, are in the [grade reference](https://www.laxconsteels.com/grades/). Weight per metre for a given width and thickness is worked out by the [weight calculator](https://www.laxconsteels.com/weight-calculator/).

## Governing standards

| Property | Value |
| --- | --- |
| EN 10088-3 | Stainless steels: technical delivery conditions for semi-finished products, bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products for general purposes. Composition, heat treatment condition and mechanical properties per grade. |
| EN 10278 | Dimensions and tolerances of bright steel products: the h and k tolerance classes for drawn, turned, peeled and ground bars. |
| EN 10058 | Hot rolled flat steel bars for general purposes: dimensions and tolerances on shape and dimensions. |
| ASTM A276/A276M | Stainless steel bars and shapes: composition, condition, mechanical properties and finish designations for hot-finished and cold-finished bar. |
| ASTM A484/A484M | General requirements for stainless steel bars, billets and forgings: permissible variations in dimensions, straightness, weight and length, and the test and marking requirements every bar order inherits. |
| ISO 286-1 and 286-2 | The ISO code system for tolerances on linear sizes: the IT grades and the fundamental deviations behind h7, h9, h11, k12, k13, j6, f7 and f8. |
| EN 10204 | Metallic products, types of inspection documents: the 2.2 test report and the 3.1 and 3.2 inspection certificates a purchase order can call for. |

## Tolerance by size, ISO 286

| Nominal dimension (mm) | h11 |
| --- | --- |
| over 6 to 10 | 0 / -0.090 |
| over 10 to 18 | 0 / -0.110 |
| over 18 to 30 | 0 / -0.130 |
| over 30 to 50 | 0 / -0.160 |
| over 50 to 80 | 0 / -0.190 |

Deviations in millimetres from the nominal size, ISO 286-1 and ISO 286-2. An h class permits no plus material and the full grade below nominal; the k12 and k13 classes of EN 10278, used for peeled and turned bars, permit the full grade above nominal and none below.

## Cold drawn flat bar against HRAP flat bar

A [hot rolled, annealed and pickled flat bar](https://www.laxconsteels.com/products/hrap-flat-bars/) carries the tolerances of EN 10058 and a pickled, matt surface. The cold drawn flat carries h11 on both width and thickness under EN 10278, sharp edges and a bright surface, and its yield strength is raised by the cold work, which is why a drawn flat is specified for slides, keys, wear strips and any part that is used as supplied on at least one face. The HRAP range runs to 150 mm wide; the drawn range runs 20 to 80 mm, and the four grades supplied drawn (304L, 316L, 316Ti and 321, as 1.4307, 1.4404, 1.4571 and 1.4541) are the low-carbon and stabilised grades that tolerate the cold work without sensitising.

The drawn bar is supplied solution annealed after drawing where the drawing specifies the annealed condition; the certificate then states the annealed properties, not the as-drawn ones.
